What is it used for (Indication) ?
Tamsulosin is used in men to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which include difficulty urinating (hesitation, dribbling, weak stream, and incomplete bladder emptying), painful urination, and urinary frequency and urgency.
How it works (Mechanism)?
Tamsulosin is in a class of medications called alpha blockers. It works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder so that urine can flow easily and decrease urinary hesitancy/urgency.
What is Enlarged Prostate ?
Enlarged Prostate also known as Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), nodular hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy (technically a misnomer) or benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP) refers to the increase in size of the prostate in middle-aged and elderly men. BPH is part of the aging process. Enlarged Prostate makes urinating more difficult by narrowing the urethra, a tube running from the bladder through the prostate gland.
How to take this medicine (Administration & Dosage) ?
1. The usual dose is 400 mcg (0.4 mg) once daily one and half hour before meal.
2. If necessary the dose is increased to 800 mcg (0.8 mg), once daily.
3. Tamsulosin capsule should be swallowed whole.
4. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsule.
5. It is not for use in women or children.
Side effects of medicine
This medication is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include headache, back pain, dizziness, nausea and asthenia.
Interaction with other medicines
If you are using any other medication while taking this medicine such as alpha adrenergic blockers, cimetidine, ketoconazole, alfusozin, doxazosin, prazosin, or terazosin.
Contraindications (Who should avoid this)
1. If you are hypersensitive to tamsulosin, or any other medications.
2. If you are patients with severe hepatic impairment and severely impaired kidney function.
Storage conditions
Store at room temperature between 15° - 30° C (59° - 86° F).
