What is it used for (Indication) ?
It is used for the treatment of early-stage Parkinson's disease, depression and senile dementia. It is also used in veterinary medicine to treat the symptoms of cushing's disease and cognitive dysfunction.
How it works (Mechanism)?
It is a selective irreversible MAO-B inhibitor, acts by inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase which prevents the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters and increases their availability.

Parkinson's disease : It is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills, speech and other functions.

How to take this medicine (Administration & Dosage) ?
1. It should be taken 5mg twice daily, maximum dose is 10mg once daily.
2. If dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. Skip the dose if it is almost on the time for next dose.
Side effects of medicine
It may show some common side effects which include dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, muscle pain, rash, nausea and difficulty in falling or staying asleep.
Interaction with other medicines
It may interact with :
- Antidepressants like fluoxetine and citalopram
- Drugs used for blood pressure or nitric drugs.
- Insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs.
- MAO inhibitors like furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide and phenelzine.
- Other drugs like brimonidine,bupropion, buspirone and carbamazepine.
Contraindications (Who should avoid this)
- In patients with a known hypersensitivity to this drug.
- For use with meperidine and other opioids.
Storage conditions
1. Keep away from light and moisture.
2. Store at room temperature between 20˚ to 25˚C (68˚ to 77˚F).
