What is it used for (Indication) ?
It is used to treat herpes virus infections like herpes zoster (shingles), herpes simplex virus 2 (genital herpes) and herpes labialis (cold sores).
How it works (Mechanism)?
It is an antiviral drug that helps to relieve pain and inflammation of herpes virus by inhibiting spreading of virus.
What is Herpes Zoster, Herpes Simplex & Herpes Labialis (disease)?
Herpes Zoster : It is also known as shingles. It is viral infection which causes blisters and skin rashes.
Herpes Simplex : It is also known as Human herpes virus 1 and 2, are two members of the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, that infect humans. Both HSV-1 and -2 are ubiquitous and contagious. They can be spread when an infected person is producing and shedding the virus. Symptoms of herpes simplex virus infection include watery blisters in the skin or mucous membranes of the mouth, lips or genitals.
Herpes Labialis : It is also known as Orolabial herpes, is an infection of the lip by herpes simplex virus. An outbreak typically causes small blisters or sores on or around the mouth commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters.
How to take this medicine (Administration & Dosage) ?
- It should be taken in dose of
- Generally: 500 mg thrice daily for 7 days.
- For genital herpes: 500mg twice daily for 1 day
- For herpes labialis (cold sores): as single dose of 1500 mg
- It should be taken with food or milk.
- If dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. Skip the dose if it is almost on the time for next dose.
- Do not stop consumption of medication without doctor's consultation.
Side effects of medicine
It may show some common side effects which include stomach upset, headaches, mild fever, nausea, vomiting, rash & diarrhea.
Interaction with other medicines
It may interact with :
- Antigout like probenecid
- Cardiac glycoside like digoxin
- Any other antiviral medications
Contraindications (Who should avoid this)
- If you are hypersensitive to it or any of its ingredients.
- If you are suffering from any kidney disease or allergies.
- If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
Storage conditions
1. Keep away from light and moisture.
