What is it used for (Indication) ?
Atenolol is a beta blocker used in cardiovascular diseases and conditions such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, arrhythmias, angina (chest pain) and to treat and reduce the risk of heart complications following myocardial infarction (heart attack). It is also used to treat the symptoms of Graves Disease, until antithyroid medication can take effect.
How it works (Mechanism)?
It works by slowing down the heart and reducing its workload to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure. It does not pass through the blood-brain barrier thus avoiding various central nervous system side effects.

Cardiovascular diseases: Any abnormal condition characterized by dysfunction of the heart and blood vessels. Some common kinds of cardiovascular disease are atherosclerosis, myocardiopathy, rheumatic heart disease, syphilitic endocarditis, and systemic venous hypertension.

How to take this medicine (Administration & Dosage) ?
1. Hypertention: The usual dosage is 50 mg taken once daily. If required it may be increased to 100 mg after 7 to 14 days.
2. Angina pectoris: The usual Adult dose is 50 mg taken once daily. If required it may be increased to 100 mg after 7 days. Depending on the severity it may be increased up to max 200 mg daily.
Side effects of medicine
This medication is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include indigestion, constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, cold extremities, fatigue or depression.
Interaction with other medicines
1. If you are using any other medication while taking this medicine such as MAO inhibitors, NSAIDs, dobutamine, lidocaine, prazosin, reserpine, theophylline, verapamil, diltiazem, clonidine or reserpine.
2. Use with precaution in elderly patient or children.
Contraindications (Who should avoid this)
1. If you are hypersensitive to atenolol or any other medications.
2. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
3. If you are breast feeding.
4. If you are a patient with cardiogenic shock; sinus bradycardia; or greater than first-degree heart block.
5. If you are patient with heart failure, renal failure, hepatic impairment, pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, thyrotoxicosis.
Storage conditions
1. Keep away from light and moisture.
2. Store at room temperature between 15° - 30° C (59° - 86° F).
