What it is used for (Indication) ?
It is used in treating bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infection, urinogenital and skin infections. It is also used in treating meningitis, gonorrhea and endocarditis. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
How it works (Mechanism)?
Ampicillin inhibits cell wall formation in gram-positive bacteria. Bacterial cell wall synthesis is inhibited by preventing cross linking of peptido glycan polymers. Ampicillin inhibits transpeptidase enzyme that is essential for cross-linking peptidoglycan layers. Thus it leads to cell death. Ampicillin also penetrates in to gram-negative bacteria due to the presence of additional amino group.
