It is used in treatment of herpes zoster and cold sores.
How it works (Mechanism)?
It works by inhibiting production and growth of virus DNA which helps in spreading of herpes virus in the human body. It does not cure virus infection completely but it helps to stop its multiplication and proliferation.
What is Herpes Zoster Cold sores (disease)?
1. Herpes Zoster: It is also known as shingles. It is viral infection which causes blisters and skin rashes.
2. Cold sores: It is a type of viral infection caused by herpes simplex 1 or herpes simplex 2 virus. Cold sore is an oral herpes infection which infects lips and mouth.
How to take this medicine (Administration & Dosage) ?
It should be applied on dry and clean skin 4/5 times a day for 4 days on affected area.
Side effects of medicine
Acyclovir’s common side effects include dryness, itching, burning sensation and flakiness of skin.
Interaction with other medicines
There is no known interaction with any other medication.
Contraindications (Who should avoid this)
Do not use acyclovir cream if you are allergic to it or to valacyclovir.
Consult your health care provider before starting acyclovir if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
It is not advised for patient below 12 years old.
Do not apply acyclovir for genital herpes, inside mouth and nose or on unaffected area.
Storage conditions
It should be stored at room temperature between 15˚ to 30˚ C (59˚ to 86˚ degree F). Keep it tightly closed and out of reach of children.
